As the wife of an American businessman I spent the better part of the 1970’s in Iran and saw the boom of the Shah’s development and great vision for Iran to be recognized internationally, in every field; it was to be Iran’s Great Civilization. An invitation to work for the Imperial Court as a horse trainer enabled me to see many of the royal family in informal moments; it also gave me an entrée into high society, to watch the upper class Iranians at play. Many generals and court officials spent much of their time junketing and enjoying all kinds of sports activities in which they indulged themselves to the fullest, in Tehran and costal resorts. This is a book of stories and anecdotes about my life during the “Golden Years” of the reign of Mohamed Reza Shahanshah Aryamehr of Iran. There were times of joy, fun, stress, accomplishment and sadness during my years living in that beautiful Middle Eastern country. Much has been said of the failure of the American officials to see what was coming in Iran soon enough to begin corrective action however, I don’t think much could have been done to stop the Revolution. Iran now, with its youthful population, that had no part in the Islamic movement, is begging to become an accepted part of the International system.

All the Shah Men eBook Gail Rose Thompson Reviews
I found this book very engaging. I think it’s a good look at the beginning and growth of the equestrian world in Iran before the revolution. Royalty makes an appearance and the military structure plays a strong part in the running of the imperial stables. While Gail Rose Thompson was engaged as trainer for the stables of the Imperial Court she had an entree into what life was like for the upper and privileged class at work and at play. She experienced the frustrations of a woman entering a male dominated profession and society. When given the chance to ride into the mountains she found beauty in the natural landscape of the country. Gail Rose Thompson showed me a picture of Iran so very different from what I have seen in the news coverage of the last years. It was a good read.
An interesting, albeit very narrow, perspective on Iran in the immediate pre-revolution time. A couple of major flaws, however
- the author in essence writes only for people who are familiar with the highly specialized world of horse shoe jumping. There is no effort to explain specialized terminology and the like. That significantly and unnecessarily limits the reach of the book.
- like many self published books, it calls out for editing--even if just from a good reader/writer. Too many unnecessary spelling, grammatical and linguistic errors.
This was an accidental purchase but what a great read. I am someone very familiar with horses an enjoy stories about riders and their horses in any venue. The very very tragic part of this book is knowing what happened to the various generals and others mentioned in this book beginning in 1979. Did the author have a glimpse of the future?
Very interesting,
Gail was my riding instructor so I have waited for her to pen this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I would recommend this book to anyone. Very informative. Gail Rose Thompson is a very brave and talented woman to have taken on this job working for the Iranians. I couldn't put this book down once I started it!
A great story of a Canadian rider/trainer adventures while trying to navigate training the top riders in Iran during Shah's regime in the '70s.
